FOCUS OF THE MONTH : EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

How HEC Paris is preparing leaders and organisations for the challenges of tomorrow

For over 40 years, HEC Paris Executive Education has supported the growth and development of organisations, through its mission of impact, its research, its teaching excellence. “It is about accompanying companies as they pursue their quest in how to lead with purpose for a responsible, sustainable, inclusive world,” says Anne-Valérie Corboz, Associate Dean, HEC Paris Executive Education and Professor of Strategy & Business Policy. “We want to inspire, influence and impact existing and future generations of leaders so that together we can co-create this.” Corboz sees HEC Paris’ role as much more than a facilitator in this transformation. “There is a stronger responsibility than ever for us to say, We think about these issues, we have some solutions, some paths for reflection – let us share them with you’,” she says.

A CUSTOMISED APPROACH TO EXECUTIVE EDUCATION
Corboz feels that the school’s “artisan, haute couture soul” is a key asset – plus there’s the fact that innovation and social justice are very much part of the French DNA. “There is a strong collaborative, co- creation dimension to our programs that I’ve rarely seen anywhere else,” Corboz says. Nowhere is this truer than when clients work with the school on one of its Custom Programs. Custom Programs are a way to help businesses be their “better selves”, whether that means improvements in diversity, inclusion, equity or equality – or by developing better leaders. “We also help organisations to understand how they respond to the needs of the next generation which wants to know, ‘Why would I want to come and work with you?’, Corboz adds.

Her colleague, Ann Gilmore, Business Development Director, Custom Programs, says that the Custom Programs that HEC Paris creates for and with businesses take on all shapes and sizes. “The programs are all very different,” she says, “and they respond to the very specific learning and development needs of the organisation. They take into consideration the context of the organization, the target audience, the corporate culture and the strategic roadmap so that they are relevant and impactful.”

EXPERIENTIAL AND PERSONAL
HEC Paris is one of the world’s top research schools in economics and management and this constant generation of new knowledge feeds into and irrigates program development. The programs are also highly experiential. While Covid has inspired HEC Paris to hit new highs in the field of distance learning, the in- person element of Custom Programs is integral to the experience. “We’re strong believers in learning by doing,” says Gilmore, “there’s a real focus on how the individuals on the program can take what they learn back to the workplace. There is a lot of bringing participants outside the classroom to create memorable moments which anchor the learning. Because of each Custom Program’s bespoke nature, there is no need for it to be anchored to Paris – Custom means exactly that, with the possibility of creating programs that take delegates all over the world. HEC Paris has branch campuses and international offices in London, New York, Tokyo, Abidjan, Qatar and Beijing – and partnerships with more than 100 global universities.

A CLEAR, FOCUSED OBJECTIVE
The starting point for all Custom Programs, however, is working collaboratively with the client to define an objective that will have long- lasting results. Every program is overseen by an academic director – an HEC Paris professor who not only co-ordinates the pedagogical team, but who brings the whole program together following consultation with key stakeholders, from participants to C-level executives. And because each program is built on such solid foundations, Gilmore says that outcomes can quite readily be measured. “One of our key strengths is ‘continuous improvement’, which means constantly checking that each session provides the necessary learning outcomes,” she says. “These are exceptional opportunities for people to create connections, break silos and explore what is important to the business, whether that is around leadership capabilities, creating a culture of intrapreneurship, leveraging data or something else.” Quite simply, says Corboz, HEC Paris Custom Programs represent the last word in tailored education. “I have been in this industry for 25 years,” she says, “and I can tell you: there’s nothing else like it in the world.”

HEC UK & HEC PARIS NEWS

Meet Marie, our new Alumni Relations & Events Manager!

Marie has joined last month the HEC in the UK Office as Alumni Relations & Events Manager. She is replacing Christina and Sophie.
After 8 years as fundraiser and program manager for a French Charity, Marie has decided to embrace a new challenge and join our UK team, with super exciting projects ahead.

Our HEC in the UK team is now complete and we are looking forward to very exciting events with our UK community!

Annual Strat Study Trip in London

Every year, the HEC UK Office organises a Learning Expedition to London for 100 students from the Master in Strategic Management. Last October, the students spent 3 days with 14 prestigious companies participating and meeting HEC Paris students. During this trip, 90+ students had the opportunity to learn more about the culture of each company, the variety of jobs and sectors, and to exchange with company representatives across divisions.

We also held a networking evening at the Caledonian Club with our Alumni based in London. A huge thank you to all of them for taking the time to share their experience with the students!

MBA Trek in London

We were very happy to welcome 40 HEC Paris MBA students during their London Trek this past month, from the Finance, Private Equity/Venture Capital and Consulting MBA Clubs. They had the opportunity to meet with 13 companies and to participate in a networking event with our amazing MBA Alumni from London. A huge thank you to our Alumni for taking the time to meet and share their experience with the students!

BECOME A COMPANION

Calling HEC alumni interested in embarking on an inter-generational journey with HEC Paris graduating students. As companions, students and alumni will challenge each other while facing fundamental questions: what meaning do I want to bring to my next career move? what do I want to be useful for?

The Companionship for a Purposeful Career Program runs from January to May 2023 with about 60 students of various nationalities studying in five different majors.

If you would have appreciated such a space to step back and tackle the transition to professional life, and if you feel this experience can help you progress on your own path, then don’t hesitate and join the adventure! Please contact Louis Faure or louis.faure@external.hec.fr if you are interested.

HEC UK Masterclass on Brands and Metaverse
with Gachoucha Kretz and Christopher Tucci

The HEC UK office organised an insightful Masterclass jointly with Imperial College Business School on October 11th.

This Masterclass was held at Imperial College where Gachoucha Kretz and Christopher Tucci spoke to a captivated audience on brands and metaverse:

·       Is metaverse really a thing?

·       What are the characteristics and technologies behind the metaverse?

·       Which opportunities does metaverse offer to businesses and brands?

·       What is the economic impact of the metaverse?

·       How does the metaverse introduce a yet untapped virtual branded economy?

The masterclass was followed by a Q&A and ended up with networking drinks for the participants. Hence, the attendees had the privilege to exchange exclusively with Gachoucha Kretz and Christopher Tucci and meet other Alumni both from HEC Paris and Imperial College.

A huge thank you to Gachoucha Kretz for such a fascinating masterclass.
