Dear HEC Alumni in Germany,

The end of the year is approaching, and we're delighted to be able to offer you a full program of events until the end of 2023: two Christmas Get-togethers in Düsseldorf (20.11) and Munich (05.12), as well as online events. In perticular, we are happy to propose a live update from the Jouy en Josas campus for all those wishing to find out more about recent developments at the school for themselves or their children (04.12).

Last but not least, the German society on campus is offering the HEC Alumni community in Germany a convivial moment of exchange over a wine tasting. For those of you who are regularly - or occasionally - in Paris, this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to exchange ideas and make new contacts. Don't hesitate to fill in the questionnaire, which aims to match your wishes as closely as possible (Survey).

Kind regards and bis bald!

Your HEC Alumni dream team in Germany: Claire Staudenmayer (H.92), Arnaud Becuwe (H.96), & Franck Fiebig (H.98)

International Climate Negotiations: do they really matter?

Thursday 23rd November - 1:00pm CET - LinkedIn Live

Do international climate negotiations really matter? Throughout their history from the late 20th century to the present, several key milestones have shaped global climate action including the UNFCCC (1992), the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and the Paris Agreement (2015). While these negotiations have faced numerous challenges, from diverging national interests to concerns over equity and fairness, they have undeniably played a pivotal role in raising global awareness and accelerating climate action. But do they truly matter in the grand scheme of things? As we look ahead to COP28, Igor Shishlov, climate policy expert and adjunct lecturer at HEC Paris, will explain the reality and challenges of international climate negotiations.

NEWS FROM THE GERMAN SOCIETY ON CAMPUS

In this month's newsletter, the German Society (GS) features two of the most important events of the year, the WHU Euromasters sports competition and the HEC Paris Oktoberfest, and announces a Winetasting event for alumni and students. Join us as we celebrate these memorable moments and look forward to a first in-person event for alumni and students in Paris. Also, we would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to fill out the survey below, which will help us in planning an unforgettable wine tasting event.

WHU Euromasters

HEC Paris Oktoberfest

At the renowned WHU Euromasters event, our German Society members proudly represented HEC Paris across a variety of sports, including basketball, football, and rowing. With over 25 student athletes participating, we engaged in a display of competitive spirit and athleticism. Every year, the event is drawing more than 2000 individuals from Europe's elite business schools to Vallendar. The three-day event combines culture, competition, and collaboration, with a side of networking with global companies. Check out our HEC team in action against LMU Munich in the enclosed snapshot.

What a blast we had at the HEC Paris Oktoberfest! Our German Society hosted a fantastic gathering, bringing a slice of Germany to over 250 students on campus. Everyone dressed up in ‘Trachten’, giving us a real feel for German traditions. We rolled up our sleeves to bake Bretzeln, served up some delicious Hendl, and raised our Paulaner beers in cheers. The atmosphere was just right: friendly, fun, and a little taste of German culture. Want to see how it all went down? Take a look at the picture below. Here’s to another great Oktoberfest and everyone who joined in!

Announcing: HEC Alumni x Students Wine Tasting

Looking ahead, the German Society is excited to announce an exclusive Wine Tasting soirée in late January/early February (exact date tbd). This intimate gathering is intended to take place at the Maison HEC in Paris, where alumni and students will have the opportunity to connect over a curated selection of fine wines. This event promises to be an enriching experience, blending the zest of current and former HEC students. Since we are still looking for the perfect date to host as many of you as possible, help us by answering the survey below. More information to come next month…

FOCUS OF THE MONTH: EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

HEC Paris Executive Education is the first Business School ever to be ranked #1 worldwide for the second consecutive year at the global level in the Financial Times Rankings.

For over 40 years, HEC Paris Executive Education has supported the growth and development of organisations, through its mission of impact, its research, its teaching excellence. “It is about accompanying companies as they pursue their quest in how to lead with purpose for a responsible, sustainable, inclusive world,” says Anne-Valérie Corboz, Dean, HEC Paris Executive Education and Professor of Strategy & Business Policy.

HEC Paris is one of the world’s top research schools in economics and management and this constant generation of new knowledge feeds into and irrigates program development. The programs are also highly experiential, as the starting point for all Custom Programs is working collaboratively with the client to define an objective that will have long- lasting results. Every program is overseen by an academic director – an HEC Paris professor who brings the whole program together following consultation with key stakeholders, from participants to C-level executives. Each program is built on such solid foundations, as well as ‘continuous improvement’, which means constantly checking that each session provides the necessary learning outcomes, as well as exceptional opportunities for people to create connections, break silos and explore what is important to the business.

HEC PARIS NEWS

Your support matters: join HEC new auditorium fundraising campaign!

Since the fire that destroyed the Amphi Blondeau, many of you have come forward. We have been deeply moved by this outpouring of solidarity, and we collectively decided to give this amphitheatre an even more central place at the heart of the campus project, which will start in 2025.

The school has decided to rebuild an 840-seat auditorium, to make it the "heart of the campus", to open it up to the future public spaces of a new iconic building, with greater ambition than was originally planned in the future Campus project. Today, it is no longer just a renovation, but a reinvention!

All of this, of course, is yet to be built, but we have a wonderful opportunity here to make something even more magnificent with everyone's support. HEC alumni and friends, students, your donations are crucial to the school, and even more so in the context of this project, as they will shape the campus of tomorrow. We hope that many of you will participate in this project.

BECOME AN ADVISOR TO GUIDE STUDENTS DURING THEIR INTERNSHIP

In order to respond to the school’s strong desire to further support students during their internship, HEC Talents wishes to expand the community of school advisors for internships - they are looking for additional 150 school advisors by February.

Your main tasks would be to support one or more interns (estimated workload of 1.5 hours per intern) to ensure their internship goes well, to listen to their feedback, to contact the school in case of any issues, and to be a signing party of the internship contract.

If you are interested in this project, please register below. We hope that many of you will join HEC Talents on this growing initiativet!

Private equity and venture capital firms: an AI arms race looms ahead

Though many sectors in finance adopted algorithmic decision-making quite early, venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) were much slower to pick up on artificial intelligence (AI). Thomas Åstebro, Professor of Entrepreneurship at HEC Paris, recently published the Journal of Financial Data Science with Portfolio Management Research (2021), wrote a paper analysing the quickly changing landscapes of AI in PE/VCs. In it, he points out how AI is expected to rapidly transform these sectors in the coming years. . Read more
