HEC Paris Chapter is pleased to invite our members to a walking tour in English with Nikki Wang (MBA 2010), the cofounder of cultural agency TheWaysBeyond to discover the Montparnasse neighborhood in its "Crazy Years".

Montparnasse today is embodied by its tower and the central station. However, the district was since 1900, the epicenter of the artistic and intellectual Parisian life, after the heyday of Montmartre and just before the Saint-Germain-des-Prés’ one.

After Apollinaire, Gauguin, Matisse, Rousseau, many foreign artists, mostly Jews, went into exile in Paris to find favorable conditions to the development of their art. Modigliani, Zadkine, Soutine, Chagall and many others formed then the “School of Paris”, a name that rather refers to a group of artists than a real artistic movement.

During the period between wars known as "Les Années Folles" (The crazy years), the artists of Montmartre moved into the dirt cheap ateliers of Montparnasse, and it quickly became the new center of Paris artistic and intellectual life. Since then more foreigners found home here, James Joyce, Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Man Ray, Foujita and Picasso were among the starving writers and artists who frequented the cafés along Boulevard Montparnasse, such as the Clôserie des Lilas, Le Dôme, La Rontonde, Le Select and La Coupôle.

The neighborhood still shows signs of artistic life, with students and visitors from all around the world. We will pass by the old atelier of Man Ray now converted into upscale housing; the legendary Hôtel Istria where many artists stayed before finding an apartment; Fondation Cartier, a unique contemporary art exhibition center designed by architect Jean Nouvel and many more other hidden gems.

Let's take a walk in this legendary neighborhood to look for the charming small streets and hidden ateliers, in the names of all these preminet expatriate artists and writers who glorified Paris and became part of Parisian memory. The tour will end up in one of the most famous terraces of the 1920 as well as today, for a drink !
