  WHEN TECH GIANTS TAKE CONTROL  Jeremy Ghez, HEC Paris Professor of Economics and International Affairs, will introduce his research on the rise of the tech oligopoly comprising Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple (GAFAs). The presentation will be followed by a conversation with LSE Professor Saul Estrin.   These giants are not only profoundly shaping the tech industry, but also redefining the notion of governance. Taken together, GAFAs generated $433 billion in revenues in 2015, putting them at the same level as a medium-sized economy in terms of financial weight and economic might.   During the session, Profs. Ghez and Estrin will discuss what their sheer financial weight means to the global economy and society, from influencing personal behaviours to fostering new geopolitical trends. How are GAFAs influencing rules and priorities in our daily life? How do they reshape our perception of space and relationships? What role do they play in the emergence of worldwide geopolitical trends? Are GAFAs redefining the whole notion of power?   Join the debate on Tuesday 21st February! He is also the Academic Director of the school’s Center for Geopolitics. His research focuses on strategic foresight, strategic surprises, global politics and economics, new models of governance and business, American and European politics as well as on Middle Eastern affairs. His work has been published in RAND manuscripts and in reviews such as Survival. He is also a Research Fellow at RAND Europe and the former Editor of La Nouvelle Revue Géopolitique.    His latest work has been focused in the geopolitical power of GAFA companies (Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple). Most recently, he won the best case of the year award in the Economics, Politics and Business Environment category at ‘The Case Centre Awards and Competitions 2016’ with his case The Economics of Amazon.   LSE Prof. Saul Estrin Saul Estrin is a Professor of Management and Founding Head of LSE’s Department of Management. He is currently the Deputy Head of Department for Strategy and Resources. He was formerly Adecco Professor of Business and Society at London Business School where he was the Research Director of the Centre for New and Emerging Markets and Director of the CIS Middle Europe Centre. Saul was also Deputy Dean (Faculty and Research) at London Business School for six years as well as briefly Acting Dean and a School governor for eight years.   Saul's main areas of research are emerging markets, with a particular focus on international business issues and entrepreneurship. He has published more than one hundred papers in scholarly journals as well as numerous chapters and reports.
