We are delighted to invite you to a breakfast and conversation at the HEC UK House:

The Triple Challenge: Energy Geopolitics, International Climate Negotiations and Governance with François Gemenne

Professor at HEC Paris, Expert on Environmental Geopolitics and Climate Change

Wednesday 11th June 2025 at 8:30am

HEC UK House 43 Parker Street WC2B 5PS

Amid the increasingly evident climate extremes occurring worldwide, Professor Gemenne will address the most pressing issues of energy geopolitics, international climate negotiations, and climate governance, focusing on their implications for Europe, the UK, and global leadership. He will explore the ecological backlash and public support, and the feasibility of the 2025 net-zero targets. His talk will be particularly timely in the lead-up to the UN Bonn Climate Change Conference next month and COP30 in Belém later this year.

He will explore these topics by discussing the following questions:

  • How are global powers reconciling continued fossil fuel development with climate commitments, and what role can the UK and Europe play in reshaping energy geopolitics?
  • Who will lead the next phase of global climate negotiations, and how can the UK sustain its influence as we approach the Bonn Climate Change Conference in June and COP30 later this year?
  • Will companies pull out in the face of growing pressure? Can the transition still be popular and supported by both the public and the business community?
  • Is the 2050 net-zero target still achievable, and what must happen now to turn pledges into credible, enforceable progress?

François GEMENNE
Expert on environmental geopolitics and climate change, a professor at HEC Paris Business School, and a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
